What is SOBC?
Stimulus — the trigger (what/where/when/tone)
Organism — the inner lens (appraisal, emotion, belief, goal)
Behavior → Consequence — what we do, and what follows
When to use it
Chat feedback feels rude or vague
Handover / brief confusion
Meeting silence after public critique
How to use (60 seconds)
Write S exactly (quote the message).
Note O (what it meant to you/them).
Capture B (observable reply/action).
Log C (outcome/time/trust).
Pick one lever: change S, prime O, or redesign C.
Quick drill
“You get: Need it ASAP!!!” → First, rewrite S with specifics + time.
Then prime O (assume quality request). Align C (recognize progress).
Manager play (1-minute)
In stand-up, each member rewrites one message using SOBC.
Share which lever you chose and why.
What you’ll improve
Fewer defensive replies and escalations
Faster turnarounds and clearer ownership
Higher trust in feedback loops
