Celebrating Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is a prominent Hindu festival celebrated across India to mark the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara) and the beginning of longer days as the Sun moves northward. This astronomical event, known as Uttarayan, symbolizes new beginnings, prosperity, and the triumph of light over darkness. Observed in mid-January, Makar Sankranti is a harvest festival that signifies gratitude to nature for a bountiful crop. It is celebrated with great fervor and regional variations across India, such as Lohri in Punjab, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, and Uttarayan in Gujarat. Activities like flying kites, lighting bonfires, and preparing traditional sweets made of sesame seeds and jaggery, like tilgul and chikki, are central to the celebrations.
